The Honourable Member for Tuscany North

I can't work out if this was an April fool's joke or not. It seems that in the Italian elections there are going to be 8 MPs elected to the Italian Parliament from outside the country. Scottish journalist Ron Mackenna is said to be standing for the newly created constituency of "Europe". I really cannot believe this is true, but can anyone shed any light on it? I've found some mentions of it through Google, but they all seem a bit suspicious to me! No doubt if it is indeed true Britain will come under pressure to follow suit. Can you imagine it? "I now call the Honourable Member for Tuscany North". Cue 25 New Labour clones to stand up...

All true. Expat Italians around the world will have a small number of "continental" MPs in the Parliament - 18 representatives for four constituencies - Europe, N America, S America, and Rest of the World.

12 MPs at the House of Deputies and 6 at the Senate.
McKenna is up for UDC (Christian Democrats at the House of Deputies).

Tuscany North? well, all constituencies has been abolished and we're back to PR (with bonus seats for the winning coalition).

It sort of makes sense; we allow ex-pats to register to vote in constituencies they've got links to, they create constituencies for them.

The only details I know are as reported here, but it's not an awful idea. Think about it Iain; would give your lot several more safe seats ;-)
