Paper Review Delayed...

We still haven't got the Sunday papers here at the Beeb so the paper review is being delayed until 12.15am - but I am sure the wait will be worth it!

By the way - anyone notice a running theme...

1986 - Argentine cheat Maradona scores with his hand - England eliminated

1998 - Argentine cheat Simeone gets Beckham sent off - England eliminated

2006 - Argentine ref sends Rooney off and fails to award England a penalty for a clear handball - England eliminated

Not that I'm into conspiracy theories, or anything...!

So it was all Thatcher's fault - if she'd have let the Argies keep the Falklands, we'd have won the World Cup by now?

See, as a girl, I don't see how Maradona scoring illegally was counted. Even given the added weight of "the hand of God" - it wasn't legal. There are limits.

So you could put the ball in the net with the "the paw of the tiger"? ... This never made any sense to women which is why a lot of us buggered off. Rules is rooles. God doesn't rule in football, having many other things to oversee.

But men let this happen. "hand of God" from a S American country? Give us a break. Someone should have felt the back of his collar - the ugly little sleaze monkey.

What was going on with the jacket during the BBC paper review this evening Iain? Was the air con blowing the jacket back and forth or were you getting over excited about the pictures from today’s quarter final. P.S. totally agree about the sorry state of the England management team. Maybe he should use the time on DD’s campaign to give the next manager advice on the path to victory?

Overrall, by the lamentable standards of this competition, the ref had a reasonable game. At least half a dozen clearer cut pens have not been awarded in the tournament. As for Rooney's dismissal...

Going by the ref's body language immediately after Whiner's attempt to de-bollock Carvalho a straight red did not appear to be on the cards. Senor Fussbudget hesitated as if half in denial about what he had just seen. Ronaldo and co's antics seemed to make up his mind (sorry, is it me being silly but didn't FIFA ask refs to clamp down on players trying to get opponenets carded and sent off?).

Rooney's exit certainly didn't help England's cause. Young Lennon's introduction (why no mention of the young Spur in your dispatches Mr Dale - there's no one quite like him for ripping teams open in the current England set up?)had already revitalised the team. I would have backed us to have at least scored over 120 minutes...

In the end we were dumped out by a proven penalty stopper (big gob Robbo just stood there cacking himself) not by our four previous insipid performances inspired by SGE (fans forget that this was mainly McClarens doing and that we have a lot more of this sad hoofin' to look forward to).

When all's said and done what did the beautiful game of the Argentinians, Brazilians, Spanish and Dutch do for them? Not that much comfort in bowing out with dignity.

Maradona I grant you, though I doubt that goal was decisive in any case but then he did score quite a good goal without his hand.

But the other two are nonsense. Yes Simeone made Beckham kick him(!). Solution don't kick him. As for yesterday, get real. The "handball" was never a penalty...the ball hit hand from about a foot away. And Rooney deserved to get sent off. The referee could have been from the moon, it would have made any difference. Why do England fans never just admit we lost fair and square?

Erm, although I'm all for blaming 1986 on Maradona's cheating antics (and the omission of the brilliant John Barnes till late on in that game), I think the other 2 points may leave you on shaky ground.

1998, yes Diego Simeone dived, but you can't really blame anyone but Beckham for flicking his foot out at him in front of the ref.

Similarly yesterday, can we really blame anyone but Rooney for that sending off. You can't really blame the ref. Rooney did stamp on Carvalho's goolies (technical term) and someone else's ankle about 2 seconds before. The guy is incredibly skilful but just has a short fuse. Unfortunately our opponents know that too - that's one of the reasons the disgustingly unsporting Ronaldo was targeting him.

Now, if you want to blame Ronaldo for influencing the ref for the sending off, I'll happily agree with you! After all, he is a nasty little winker!

Oh yeah, I didn't really see a clear penalty for handball - but whatever happened we must say that Owen Hargreaves and Aaron Lennon were brilliant...and Frank Lampard was poor.

Rooney deserved to be sent off.Equally if Ronaldo returns to English football I hope it will not be long before somebody breaks his leg and sends him into early retirement.
This World Cup has been a charter for cheats and sadly 4 teams all of whom contain world class divers will be contesting the semifinals.
Please God don't let it be Thierry Henry and France!

Looks like England needs to learn how to cheat successfully, since it appears to be the 'winning strategy'.

Just as well that I watch footie for the sexy legs and butts and don't care too much about the actualy rules... heh >-)

Does this mean it's safe to turn the tv on again?

Well, as an Englishwoman, I was praying from the beginning of the tournament that the bunch of arrogant, overpaid thugs that comprise the England squad were sent home as early as possible. Rooney and co have just re-inforced my opinion of them. It's just a shame they got past the group stage.

It's one of those things. When we went out to Maradona's goal, we were second best and his second goal was enough to deserve to win it on its own really. In the other two cases, we shouldn't have had players sent off and have only ourselves to blame. As for the "penalty" yesterday, you sometimes see them given and sometimes not - the issue is always "hmm, it was ball to hand but was his hand where it should have been".

What saddens me is that it's McLaren next. He seems a likeable chap and competent manager, and I wish him every good fortune, but he isn't Martin O'Neill. You just get the feeling this time that it was a chance given away and we will not have that level of possibility again for many years.

Back in the real world, Fred Trueman is dead.

I agree with Kerron. We were up against difficult odds, but that is no excuse of Rooney kicking Carvalho's private parts, nor even for Erikson to allow Lampard to take part in the penalty shootouts when he never scored a goal during the World Cup.
As for fair play. I would rather suffer the indignity of England losing with us playing well, compared to winning after a bevvy of cheats and fouls against the opposition. A win-at-all-costs attitude can take you into places you just don't want to be

We lost.

It's only a game.

Get over it.

My God the anti-furriner feelings must be rising after 120 minutes of hurt yesterday.

It's now D*go Maradonna and the Argies who are getting it.

Same old Tories, same old high minded snobbery towards others.

Can I have my oil back once you've used it?

Anonymous said...

To be honest, Jock, we were thinking of using the oil to set fire to the Portuguese Embassy... Would you mind if we did?

The view of many at OT will be that Ronaldo might just be worth the hassle of extra security if he was consistently good. But he isn't. He's good now and then, but spends the rest of the time showboating. Besides which, even before the events of yesterday evening, he'd voiced his desire to go to Real Madrid. Far better to sell him to Real Madrid, and use the proceeds to buy another winger (like Damien Duff).

Even with Ten men we would have one if we had a real striker.

Sven you're a plank.

Er you missed two out....

Owen diving to win penalty in 98 (but England lose thanks to Beckham's sly kick) Owen diving to win penalty in 2002 England win despite clinging on for last 20 minutes...

if england had bothered to play decent football I wpuld have happily supported them but the constant whinging combined with the usual ineptitude bores the pants off most objective people.

By the way on the basis of previous posts are you now backing France or germany as the nearest team to England :)
