Prescott's Council of War With Caborn, Watts & Winterton

Jon Craig on Sky News has just reported that John Prescott held a "Council of War" with three friends last night in the Strangers Bar of the House of Commons. The three friends were Sports Minister Richard Caborn, David Watts MP (who, he?) and Rosie Winterton. It was at that meeting that they decided to fight back and for Prescott to go on the Today programme. Not sure that was the best strategy...

UPDATE: Tim Montgomerie at ConservativeHome and William Norton give the real reasons Prescott should resign HERE.

What can Rosie Winterton have been there for? I have a feeling we are going to get an announcement very soon that Prezza is going to admit to more affairs and that he will be turning to the department of health for a statement!

He cannot go on pretending nothing went on, even if the Biased Braodcasting Company refuse to see it.

David Watts is MP for St Helen's North, PPS to John Spellar. Liverpudlian. Not done much since 1997 but has a track record as a subsidy junkie - he chairs some sort of pressure group connected with European structural funds (not quite sure what it does or wants but since Prescott is a fan of regionalisation there's an obvious overlap). Interestingly enough (?) Watts was also present at a crisis planning meeting in December 2003 to try to turn round the campaign for a regional assembly in the North West (which, of course, never went ahead because the North West is far too sensible to swallow such toss). So there's evidence Prescott or someone close to him thinks he has something to contribute to doomed causes.

Caborn has form over years of being a Prescott trusty - and interestingly enough he isn't just Minister for Sport, he also looks after gambling at DCMS. Rather puts into perspective the suggestions that Prescott was completely insulated from any decisions over the casino.

OF COURSE I've never heard any gossip or rumours about Rosie Winterton - clearly she has led a blameless life.

Prescott, Winterton AND Caborn? Good heavens!

If you're in trouble and one must conclude Prezza is by any definition in trouble, why is he hanging round with this lot? Caborn is useless. Seriously, a dreadful minister. Winterton - well rumours abound and David Watts. Well, as Prolix correctly points out, David Watts is the name of a Jam tune and also an ex-character in Stenders (bianca's dad had an affair with cindy).
problem solved?

I ought to add that my earlier comments on Dave Watts are slightly out of date. He's now a Govmt whip having been Prescott's PPS. Thank you to all the kind friends who pointed this out to me.

On the Kinks backlist theme, how appropriate are these:
"Dead End Street"; "Death of a Clown"; "Apeman"; "Where Have All The Good Times Gone"; "I'm In Disgrace"; "Catch Me Now I'm Falling". The lyrics to "Sunny Afternoon" are also suggestive..

The press man says I've got to go,
And Tony's swiped my stately home,
For lazing on a sunny afternoon.
I can't play my croquet set,
Or visit Anschutz on a jet,
All I've got's this sunny afternoon.

Save me, save me, save me from this squeeze.
I got two big bloggers trying to break me.
And I hate to live so peasant-ly,
Prefer a life of luxury,
Ranching on a sunny afternoon.
In the summertime
In the summertime
In the summertime

A girlfriend's run off with one jag,
And teamed up with a Sunday rag,
Selling tales of drunkenness and cruelty.
Now I'm getting heat,
For studying the sugar beet,
Ranching on a sunny afternoon.

Help me, help me, help me save the day,
I need two good reasons why I oughta stay.
'Cause I love a life that is not coarse,
Talking about Wilberforce,
Ranching on a sunny afternoon.
In the summertime
In the summertime
In the summertime

Ah, save me, save me, save me from this squeeze.
I got two big bloggers trying to break me.
And I love to live so pleasantly,
Live this life of luxury,
Ranching on a sunny afternoon.
In the summertime
In the summertime
In the summertime
