But We Don't Want to Give You That...

Joan Collins and her husband Percy were just on Who Wants to be a Millionaire? For £16,000 they had this question...

Who is the current Father of the House of Commons?

A. John Gummer
B. Alex Salmond
C. Tam Dalyell
D. Menzies Campbell

Just as well they didn't attempt to answer it becasue Chris Tarrant would have had egg all over his face. The correct answer is, in fact, Rt Hon Alan Williams MP. Tam Dalyell was indeed Father of the House, but he retired at the last election. Tsk Tsk.

UPDATE: This is very odd. Derek Laud and Edwina Currie are now in the hotseat. This programme must have been recorded about a year ago because I was one of Derek Laud's phone-a-friends (supposedly for my knowledge of sport!). Luckily I wasn't called... Perhaps the programme is a repeat, but it doesn't say so in the paper.

Can we also mention how STUPID Edwina and Derek must be to think that Venezuela does not have an Atlantic coast? Haven't they ever looked at a map of the world before?!

According to the Radio Times, it is a "Revised repeat".

Derek Laud was the best Big Brother contestant ever! (I think the shows on at the moment Iain are repeats)

Speaking of millionaire, what was the question A.Campbell got wrong? It was something very obvious to do with spacecraft. Anyway, he got it wrong and looked a right wally, winning only £1000

Not hard to do that however...

Digiguide (you do use it Iain - great software?) shows it as a repeat.

Fred - Campbell's question was what was the American space station called? The answer was skylab.

No it wasn't. It was "Which nation launched skylab?"

I think Campbell went for France when it was, in fact, the USA.

Read the cheques. They all said 09/05. Sorry Iain this time you're way off beam.

Anonymous, no I'm not. If it was September 2005 Alan Williams was the Father of the House then too, not Tam Dalyell.
But what a terrible reflection of ITV that on a Saturday night they are showing repeats of Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Truly terrible. No wonder they;re doing badly in the ratings war.

..... and didn't Edwina appear by far the more stupid of the two, by attempting to levy the blame entirely on Derek, having immediately previously boasted that she knew exactly where Equador was as she had visited there!

Probably a good thing if you got the spelling right - it's Ecuador with a 'c', isn't it?

NO it isn't actually! In this country (Ealing apart evidently) we spell it Equador, just as we refer to Italy rather than Italia.

And here's a little friendly tip for you - if you intend visiting this site regularly, or any other blog for that matter, try not to be too picky about others' spelling - it won't win you many friends.

Is this the same Joan Collins who helped Robert Kilroy Silk get elected as a UKIP MEP for the East Midlands...

Less than a year later, voters wised up in the general election and unceremoniously sent him home.

I believe he just about held his deposit.

Presumably he's still claiming handsome allowances from the European Parliament, but does anyone know what he actually does to justify his rations these days?

I'm sorry if you were offended. There was no need to respond quite so sharply - and after all, you were talking about people being stupid, which isn't exactly nice.

I wasn't saying that you were stupid. I was merely pointing out that I thought you'd spelt the name of a country wrong. If you go to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office website, you'll see a section on travel advice to particular countries. You can't get much more official than that and it's spelt with a 'c' there.
