Margaret Beckett Says She is Staying Put

A friend of mine has just been to a speech by our Foreign Secretary on Climate Change (on the record) where she was talking about what she plans to do on the world stage. She started a sentence with "I will" and then added "You will note I did use the future tense" (The audience duly 'oooed' and tittered).

Is this mere bravado, false hope, a united front to prove they are not the "living dead" or... has she been told that she is staying put after Comrade Brown takes over? Surely it has to be the former. I cannot think of any good reason for the Dour One to keep her in post.

She must know where the bodies are buried??

There is of course a third way.

Even if she never works another day, she will have done enough to secure her place in the Hall of Fame of the Monstrously Over-promoted.

She's very close to Gordon and I think he will be very reluctant to move her on, but in terms of party management the FCO will surely either go to Straw, as reward for being campaign manager and general all-round cheerleader, or Miliband, to square the Blairites.

Still licking its wounds from the failure of its campaign to make David Miliband Prime Minister, the BBC has begun a campaign to remove Margaret Beckett as Foreign Secretary once Gordon Brown takes over at Number 10. This campaign must be opposed and stopped.

You don't have to like, or approve of, Mrs Beckett (although right-wing readers should note that she is the most Eurosceptical Foreign Secretary since Bevin, which is why the Beeb wants rid of her). You just have to believe that campaigns of this kind are not what the BBC is for.

As for Milly, Brown should sack him, at which point his rather improbable constituents at South Shields (has he ever even met them?) would deselect him.

Not that Milly's the only one like that, of course...

He may want to have two former party leaders in his Cabinet - her and Kinnock. People forget that she was leader don't they?

It must be good news for the Conservatives if she stays though.

Does the Reclusive One have a secret debt of gratitude to Grandma Beckett? Something to do with associations with the Smith Institute, which as everyone knows is nothing whatsoever to do with the funding, support and promotion of a certain Mr Brown?

It can't be anything to do with ability, because she has none and is an international laughing stock.

Dunno. She can't be that close to Gordon if she couldn't recognise that it wasn't him on the phone when Rory Bremner tricked her.

Her dreadful performances will take a bit of the spotlight off his murky affairs for a while

Iain, sorry but I disagree. She is one of life's survivors, and she has been around for donkey's years.

Whether or not you think she is doing a great job she is one of those cats with nine lives.

And to be honest, who else has Brown got to replace her ? Tessa Jowell ?
Harriet Harman ? Enough said...

Think you'll find she still gets a high vote within nulab. Not surprising compared to the other non-males.

We can only hope she's referring to a long term membership of the Caravan Club.
