Poll Shows Labour Doing Worse Under Brown

There's a YouGov poll in tomorrow's Sunday Times showing Labour at their highest rating for 8 months - on 34%. The Conservatives are on 38%, one point down, while the LibDems have also gone down one to 15%. However, and it is a big however, the poll contains a sting in the tail for Gordon Brown, showing support for Labour slipping back down to 32% if he is leader, ten points behind the Tories who rise to 42%. The poll shows that by 50% to 31% people said that they did not like the Chancellor and by 35% to 32% that he would not be a good representative of Britain abroad. By contrast, they thought by 49% to 46% that overall Mr Blair had been a good Prime Minister.

Oh dear, Mr Brown.

I will try desperately not to mention all this when I do the News 24 Newspaper Review at 11.45 tonigh. Really. No, really!

What would the figures be like if either Meacher or McDonnell were leader?

Well whilst this figure is terribly exciting, Mrs Thatcher managed to overcome being behind in the polls midterm to win general elections. Repeatedly. Also Brown as a person is a fairly unknown quantity, the electorate haven't heard a great deal from him personally as they have Blair, as such once he is his own man he will have a greater opportunity to improve his 'polling' which in the middle of an unpopular war isn't going to be setting any records anyway. Its not good, but its not that bad yet.

In his Blair years overview Simon Hoggart said "Gordon Brown shows promising signs of being permanently on the brink of losing control, and that may make for great sketchwriting."

An excellent example of the Rebecca myth, Iain. Didn't take long to kick in!

So we're going to have Gordon Brown smeared all over us like slurry over a field just because lots of idiots were naive enough to vote ... sorry I don't trust any of those political bigots and I think Brown if he's going to rule anywhere should be King of Scotland, not England. What right have they got to come here and rule over us? We're not allowed to be first minister of Scotland are we? Anyway ..! I do blogs too. My main one is my kind of secret diary online. The other 2 are video blogs:: one music, one comedy. You must come see them and tell what you think!! See you there hopefully

Exactly. I love the Scots - my daughter's half Scots - and I believe that the people of Scotland will get Independence and make success of it. Good luck to them, they deserve it.

But England must have Independence too, not least because it is likely to mean that we will never again be hijacked by a Scots mafia clique.

The people of England comprise around 90% of the Uk's population so it is undemocratic and unacceptable that some 30% of our government, our PM and top Minsters are Scots.

There must be justice for England too.

Calm down dear, it's only a poll. brown isn't in charge yet. Three years of brown running the country, not invading iraq, not having a grasping wife, not thinking he's hugh grant, not emoting, not trying to immerse us in europe...three whole years. brown, with the full armoury of power. he is a fantastic operator. he brought blair to his exit, when most commentators were predicting his demise. i'd say it's at least evens.

There are times when I wonder why I post on your blog (tho I am a v regular reader) and on Guidos. All that seems to happen is a shitstorm of abuse. Then again, as often happens, I think that the pair of you (and no offence meant by this), don't quite GET Labour politics. fair play. I don't quite get the Tories. I can see a cameron govt being fairl good for the country in a negative way, ie not doing as much harm as Blair. But brown is different, and you need to learn what he's about, and not just abuse him.
Tinkerty-tonk!

What anonymous said. These polls are worthless. Brown - unlike the boy Cameron - has at least a couple of years as PM. Voters will base their judgements on his actual performance over that period and will compare this with Cameron's hypothetical future performance. Statement of the blindingly obvious, but I'm not sure you get it.

Well done on the News 24 slot, incidentally!

Anonymous said...

Most people are not interested in politics. Brown is boring and picks his nose. Cameron is nice looking and doesn't pick his nose. Therefore he will get elected. It's probably that simple.

A poll on the BBC news website currently stands at:

Who would make the best leader of the Labour Party?
Gordon Brown 55.1%
John McDonnell 10.52%
Michael Meacher 8.10%
None of the above 26.28%

As this is the only vote we will have on detested Broon sliding into the PM's job, don't forget to vote!

Great news in The Guardian today "Poll surge as Brown unveils policy blitz" it appears Gordon has given the Labour Party that boost in the polls I know we were all hoping for.Well fellow posters it looks like we have turned the corner and soon Blair will be but a distant memory, the voters will have forgotton him within a month of his leaving.Gordon will be a good leader of what has been an appalling government, but with his dedication to all that is good and a new team in charge I feel we will all be able to say again with pride "Ten more years, ten more years" I know you will all with me want to wish Gordon a long and successful future leading our nation to even greater glories.

And you are the sort of person "we" (is that the Royal "we"?) want on this blog? Christ, get over yourself woman, your relentless attempts at self-aggrandisement are just embarrassing now. YOU do not get to say who should and shouldn't post here, no matter what your right-wing, class-driven obsessions make you believe.

Gledwood could have chosen to be all but anonymous like you, but he chose to link to his blog. Four of them in fact. He has not tried to hide the fact that he is a drug addict and his blogs reflect a man humbled and trapped by his situation, for which he blames no one but himself. His blog is a diary of his life and attempts at recovery, written in an accessible style and frequently updated.

Where's your blog Verity? Where's the HTML that sums up your life in a few pages for all to judge you by?

Thought not.

Having watched Rory Bremner's hilarious sketch on the BBC website, I think he should be PM. He's a doddle to lip read too, much better than most of our mumbling politicians.

Paxo: Prime Minister, what will you be doing tomorrow?

Blair: Well, I'll stil be Prime Minister!

Paxa: And the following day?

Blair: I'll still be Prime Minister!

Paxo: And next month?

Blair: ...still Prime Minister!

Paxo: Er...It will be the 27th June...?

Blair: Oh, yes...but I didn't say which year, did I?

I think this is going to be a wait and see scenario.

I have never been Labour old or new!
However I have been suggesting for many years that there should no longer be political parties, you cannot have a democracy when you have representatives of the people being governed by a party whip.(will of PM) Brown seems to realise this.

If he is serious about making politicians more accountable and if he goes through with it, that can only be good for the 90% of the population being shit on every day of he week.
Should he then stop listening to the 'carefully selected few' and start talking to the 90% he will find out that the corruption has spread to local governments, and government initiatives around the country. Namely when Blair's lot of cronies got in, they seemed to pick a large majority of lying, stealing, robbing, basically dishonest rogues to back them and their initiatives up. This is what has led to the decline of interest in politics, because it spans the parties--- Independants get in locally only to align with their party. Lab,lib, cons.
Prime example. Our local regeneration trust suddenly realised that the money was not always going to be there, so they built themselves £1.8million offices - (when there was existing buildings which were available) proceeded to buy businesses holiday lets etc. in order that their own jobs and incomes would be secure. The money did not go for what it was intended!
This is corruption and it is rife. If Gordon Brown intends to tackle all of this, then he will gain 90% of the public vote.
I was swayed towards Mr. Brown because the BBC were extremely negative (the BBC being biased in favour of the EU).
If Brown does indeed prosecute those in power both locally and nationally for dishonesty, then democracy may well be restored in this country.

God knows all parties to date have helped in destroying it.

Brown's votes are still dropping on the BBC website and 'none of the above' is on still on the rise!

The BBC are PRO Tony and the EU. Brown has stated that he wants to speak with the queen every 2 weeks (as was always done till Tony) Take more power back to parliament, (didn't say it but that means taking it off the EU)
Of Course the BBC are going to try and alter public opinion, they are a propaganda channel!!

And I am not a Labour voter, but even I can realise that Brown is possibly speaking more for the public now than any other party!

If Brown looks into making Parliament more accountable, who do you think will suffer?? Yes the BBC because they are not allowed to be political but are! (If he holds firm the BBC will have to start reporting the truth without all the bias)
The MP's and Tony's crnies in the house of Lords.
To name another, apart from Benn today. Mackenzie of Framwellgate. A Lord who used to be a police officer, (1997 started advising labour) who was working on computerised databases, who is actively promoting, both in the UK and the EU biometric ID cards, look at all of his business interests, he advises then opens bloody companies. He has companies searching and selling our info, CRB checks etc...

Don't be so pro the BBC and ask yourself, why would they wish to silence this man and paint him in a bad way??
Those in power pull the strings and they are certainly pulling them now..
Think about this logically how did Blair get into power?? - Media all pro Blair and look what he has done for us!
And now they're all anti Brown?
It seems obvious to me he is not going to be their puppet.
I for one say, give the Guy a chance, something stinks and it is quite possibly not Gordon this time around!

paige said...

Actually I need to add to the above comment.

What has Blair done for this country? He has given away democracy and power time and again to the EU. His cronies MP's, Lords, Ladies and even rejected MP Mandelson are now making the laws for this land, without referendum in the EU.
Blair has destroyed democracy and is due to sign a treaty on the 21st of June which will give the EU more power and us even less democracy.
They claim they want the people to have more say, so they ask them do you want a regional assembly? NO! not the right answer so we get them.
The EU wants them so we have to have them - Prescott.. The Home Office has run for 100's of years and now it is split because the EU wants it this way so that we 'conform' to their model. Reid..
Tony could not have done all he has without Presecott -- Too bloody true the man would have sold out his mother for 20 pieces of silver!!
I predict that all of this has fallen at a time when this treaty will make a president of the EU and Tony's signing of it will make him president and not accountable for war crimes/treason. Prescott will be in line for something over there as will Reid.
Democracy? We should have an uprising in this country, 5% of the population benefit from the EU the rest of us poor buggers 95%pensioners, postal workers, maufacturers, farmers, fisheries etc. etc. are paying for it.
What do we get for our money, work it all out from your TV license, to you road tax, car insurance, house insurance, rates, telephone, internet, what do we really get.
We pay £30 a quarter just to have a line for a telephone, if we don't have a line we do not get a loan!
TV licence?? £135.00 for what a propaganda channel that we have to pay for?? Jesus at least Sadam let the people have their's for nothing!
Car tax - Why are there so many potholes everywhere?
National insurance? pension and health.... Well we know that is not working!
Rates which prevent the small holder, small business starting up business and which encourages the likes of Tesco - Yep New Labour friend - Who feed us shit, cost us in non recyclables, bring in GM food, keep the info on a loyalty card and sell that info on!. God help the smoker who has been eating all the genetically modified fresh pasta and washing it down with a bottle of wine. There goes the hospital treatment, the GM producers however intervene as they wish to keep tabs on how well the GM is doing and if there are any adverse effects and meanwhile the farmers are going out of business and we have a country which cannot feed itself...
Brilliant Blair oh how truly patriotic you are!!

When bad mouthing like this starts happening, you've got to ask yourself why the people at the top are worried. Because if they are making noises the 95% of this countries mugs will start to get a better deal!
