Labour MP in High Court Libel Action

I'm told that there's an interesting libel case in the High Court this morning involving Labour MP Martyn Jones. Jones, best known for his bow ties, is suing Associated Newspapers for libel over an incident reported in the Mail on Sunday in which he is alleged to have told a House of Commons security guard to 'F' off. Rumour is that the Serjeant at Arms might make a rare appearance in the witness box.

I could believe such behaviour of some Labour MPs but not Martyn Jones. After all he had to deal with being the next-door MP to John Marek for fourteen years and if that doesn't teach you patience then nothing will.

Is he hard up? Dear God, what a whinger- there are worse things that could be printed in the Mail!

TLQJ/06/1150 Jones v Associated Newspapers Ltd

Seems to me to be a bit of a spurious claim on the face of it, but anyone who thinks he can do the Daily Hatemail over wins my unblinking support....

Lady Finknottle and I like to peruse your bon mots whilst enjoying our tea and crumbly upside down cake.We do not appreciate uncouth language and have had frequent recourse to smelling salts until you tidied up the commnent threads.
Her Ladyship is presently recieving the ministrations of Dr.Square having been quite overcome by your use of

F----
He may , young Dale , be able to enter the HOP having used such language but it is out of place in your blog. Please preserve this treasured space for decorum and civility.

Thankyou.

Hope the whinger loses and gets stung for costs etc. Serves the welsh faggot right. has anybody taken the time to read up his track record at westminster. Below average on most measurable matters.

Never bring a libel suit unless you are 100% confident and have no skeletons in the cupboard.Even then, think twice.Just write a reader's letter denying it.It will wrap fish and chips in a week and be forgotten.

Well, Jones may wear bow ties, but what does that Serjeant at Arms wear, eh?

Maybe he could get some advise from that other famed libelist Paul Flynn MP, then again maybe not as Mr Flynn lost.

What a waste of time....Sir David Eady was not too helpful to Lord Browne.....though he did find for Galloway......but to have a High Court Judge whose speciality is Libel shows what a farcical class-based judicial system we have

Did anyone hear Clive Anderson mocking Baroness Hale and Lord Falconer in their presence on Radio 4 on Saturday evening ?

How could you libel a Labour MP?

Was he rashly accused of anwering a question truthfully, acting with integrity, respecting democratic process etc etc

I know Martyn Jones and it's not his style at all to swear like that. It is, however, the style of hacks on the Mail on Sunday to make stuff up - eg: the parcel of rubbish about Channel 4's Jon Snow and his (wrongly) alleged affair with Precious Williams which is certain to mean heads will roll at the paper. No, iain, the Sergeant at Arms won't appear in the witness box. Suspect, the MoS political hacks got you to run with that nonsense to try to frighten off the MP....you shouldn't be quite so guilible.

Sadly, the MoS have been out to get Jones since there last attempt to smear the guy...they accused a relative (who was called Jones. I mean what are the chances in Wales!!) It wasn't his relative and the paper's political team was left with egg on its face and has been determined on revenge ever since..see cutting below

Martyn Jones, the Labour MP for Clwyd South has hit back at claims in a newspaper that he employs a family member in his Westminster office.

The article - published on 19th October in the Mail on Sunday - claimed that Mr Jones' Parliamentary Assistant, Steven Jones was related to the senior Welsh backbencher. A claim that is completely untrue.

This is the second time in two years that a national Sunday newspaper has made such a claim. The publication of the Mail on Sunday article follows a similar untruth printed in the News of the World last year.

"This is an outrageous slur by the Mail on Sunday,? said Mr Jones. ?They are obviously desperate to run articles critical of MPs following the Iain Duncan Smith 'Betsygate' allegations last week.

"For the record, I do not employ any member of my family in any capacity. Steven is not related to myself in any way. We just happen to share the same surname - which is not surprising as we both hail from North Wales!

"The chances of me employing someone from Wales called 'Jones' are extremely high. There are seventeen pages of 'Joneses' listed in the Wrexham phone book alone!? he added.

"It is not against any rules for MPs to employ relatives. I simply choose not to do so.

"This is extremely sloppy research by the Mail on Sunday, and I am seeking a full retraction by the editor in the next edition."

Colin D: I'm surprised you know which way up to hold his track record to read it.

You seem to have a problem with the Welsh. Care to explain?

Actually, Martyn Jones may be better known for buying a brewery than for his bow ties:

Whether he has yet managed to organise a social event there remains to be seen. I await an invite.

17 pages of Jones' in the Wrexham phonebook alone? More genes in the pool required maybe?
