In a sense Draper may not have been lying 'on purpose'. These bastards, being amoral, their mendacity comes naturally, probably with little or no forethought. It is fixed; there is perhaps little consciousness of the act of lying.

Doesn't excuse it, though.

It probably wasn't "on purpose". Lying is what these PR idiots do automatically; telling the truth is probably a real struggle.
